Weather in Victoria can be unpredictable, making getting to and from school challenging. With many differences in weather around Victoria, families may need to make their own decisions about the safety of travelling to and from school and we respect their need to anticipate changes or exercise extra caution during the winter months and periods of extreme weather.
The decision to close the school due to a power outage or other circumstances is made on a case-by-case basis, taking all factors into careful consideration. Selkirk Montessori will do its best to remain open for students and staff on all scheduled school days to provide duty of care. The safety of students and staff is our top priority. Situations such as snow, flooding, power outages, and other emergencies may disrupt a normal school day. If school closure becomes necessary, the decision will be made by the Head of School, specific to our school situation. We endeavor to inform all parents as early as possible. A general rule of thumb is: if SD61 is closed, we are always closed. If they remain open with limited operation, ie. no bussing, reduced staffing, we may also be closed. If you can access the internet, current information about school closures will be posted on the Selkirk Montessori website and social media channels. Local radio stations may also announce closures.
Please note: Typically, only cancellations, closures, or delayed school openings will be announced. Except under extreme circumstances, no announcements will be made if the school is open as usual.
School Closure During School Hours
If weather conditions create safety concerns during the school day, including increasing difficultly travelling safely, the school may close early after consultation with administration. While every effort will be made to keep the school open, families are encouraged to establish a plan for their children in case of early dismissal or closure. Announcements regarding closures will be made through the methods listed above. Teachers will contact parents or emergency contacts to inform them of a closure. Students may only leave with their parent, guardian, or approved adult listed on file.
